The Tilford Family
The Tilfords 2023
Welcome!
I am Nicole and I am the wife to the most incredible man; Eric. We live in East Tennessee with our five children; Tristan, Lily, Nico, Harlan and Nolan. Together, we are The Tilfords! Grandpa Steve lives with us too!
Growing weary of social media, we decided to give our our blog another try. So, we fired this bad-boy up once again in hopes of staying in better contact with our family and friends who are scattered all over the United States and Australia.
In our blog, you will hear about our children, our animals, details about our life and anything that goes on in our beautifully messy world. We hope you enjoy hearing about our life and come back for more…. Thanks for stopping by!

Sunrise this Morning
This was the view from our bedroom this morning.
I could not resist taking a photo of it, it was stunning.
The fog was settled in the valley and the sun was trying to peek through the clouds.

Eggs
Photos
The past week and a half have been a tad busy around here and away from here so I do not have a lot of photos or things to say right at the moment but I have a couple of photos from when Sawyer was here two weekends ago.
I will try to update soon, I have some things to fill everyone in on the neighbor, the critters and life on the ranch. I will make time very soon!

Congrats Jeremy and Katelyn
We would like to say we are so happy for my Brother, Jeremy and Sister-in-Law, Katelyn on closing escrow on their first home last Friday!
We were with them on Saturday helping do a little preliminary moving prior to the big move this weekend and we got to see their new home.
We absolutely love it. It is a beautiful home and is perfect for them. There is a ton of room for so many things on the acreage and it is a very low maintenance property. They will be able to have the animals they want with no issue and with room to spare for their gardens. The bedrooms are large and there are enough of them for expansion ;-) and guests.
Also, the town of Valley Springs is very lovely and quaint. I loved how wide open the town is and how flat the land is out there. It totally reminded me of the mid-west or Idaho.
I took a few pics and plan to take a few more of our shenanigans this weekend during the real move.
Congrats you guys! We are so happy for you. 2014 is a big year for you and we are thankful to be a part of it. We love you both.
I took a few pics on Saturday but not many. Next time I will try to get some of the town.

An Unwanted Visitor
So, I am driving home from work on Friday evening when I get a text from Eric saying "please call me, kinda important". Of course, I immediately panic and call him. As my heart is thundering through my ears and out of my chest, he tells me that our neighbors stallion jumped the fence to our back pasture and was in with two of our horses; Jake and Diva. I immediately calm down because it was not about the dogs or "bad important"... Not wonderful news but not the terrible news my mind immediately goes to (it is a defense mechanism to help me start to deal with the "bad important" things that happen)...
Anyway, I am still not thrilled because Diva is in heat and so is Kahlua and both Cobra and Luna are able to get pregnant as well. We DO NOT want another horse and have been thinking of downsizing or at least trying to find homes for a couple of the girls so they can be "used" to their full potential.
So, we have no clue how long he has been over on our property or what exactly has transpired since he has been there.
Jake was none too pleased to be sharing his girl (he's a gelding but thinks he is not) and was showing it by biting and chasing the stallion. Diva was continuing to tease and started kicking him and Kahlua was WAY hot and bothered. I am pretty sure something happened through the fence between the stallion and Kahlua and I am almost positive something happened with him and Diva. I don't think anything happened with him and Cobra or Luna.
Our neighbor does not live on his property, just has his horses and barn out there so he wasn't a door knock away. We did call and I left the neighbor two messages prior to even getting home and Eric had been trying to catch the horse to no avail.
We decided to let all of our horses out on the rest of the property after moving Jake and Diva to the main pasture because the stallion kept charging the fence separating them to get to the girls. He also at one point looked like he was going to jump the gate separating the back pasture and the main pasture. Kahlua could not get enough of him either, it was disgusting. :-)
After letting them out onto the property from the main pasture, they did their usual stampeding all over the property and basically raising hell before settling down and eating some left-over hay and some grass that is growing (finally). We had originally left Maverick and Blaze in the corral since that is their sanctuary but they were beyond jealous and being kind of vocal about it so we let them out to join the rest of the gang. Plus, we decided that once the stallions owner came to get him, we would let him in the main pasture then in the corral for them to halter him and lead him home.
The neighbor finally called back after our fourth phone call to their second number and said he would come over. Meanwhile, the stallion was raising his own hell in the back pasture after we took the girls away from him. He continued until his owners came about an hour and a half later.
Once they got here, it went pretty smoothly. Eric opened the gate from the back pasture to the main pasture and after directing the stallion in the right direction (he first ran all the way to the far side of the property), he ran up the hill and went directly into the corral. The neighbor then went in and haltered him and led him home. They have now reinforced the barn and put the Stallion inside of one of the stalls. He had been out in their back pasture with their other horse (a gelding) but Diva is constantly teasing him. Well, now that he is 3, he is realizing what can be done with his goods and is not letting anything hold him back. Even a 6 foot fence.
I am going to hope and pray that Diva, Kahlua, Cobra and Luna did not get pregnant by him (Cobra and Luna were never really near him that we could see but again, we don't know how long he was over there for and what kind of "access" he had to the other female horses aside from Diva).
Once the neighbor came and I saw they had some help, I went inside to be with the dogs. I ended up falling asleep on the couch until Eric came in about 9:30 (I had been asleep for maybe 1/2 hour). I asked how things went, he said it was fine and all done and I fell back asleep!!
I guess it was too much excitement for me! I can only imagine how the horses slept! Hahahaha.
I guess our neighbor was very apologetic and super nice and even did some work to his barn that night to ensure the stallion stayed put.
Not exactly what we wanted to do on our Friday night but such is life on the Ranch sometimes!

Kicking up her heels
This is usually what we do with Hunny Bunny in the evening so she can stretch out her legs and kick up her heels a little. I do not like to see her cooped up in her pen all day without getting to be let out for at least 10 or 15 minutes at night to run around and have some fun.
Luckily, her pellets are easily cleaned up since she leaves them all over the place.
I have a few videos of her doing some cute little maneuvers last night in the living room.
We will not leave her out unattended since she is still so fragile and we have the cats and dogs and I do not quite trust them yet.
There are several videos here but most are short.
Enjoy!

RIP Crested Khaki Campbell Ducks x4
Saturday morning I had the misfortune of waking up to 4 of our ducks missing when I went out to do the morning feeding. I looked all over the place but I knew deep down what had happened. This time, it was no cute little masked bandit (killer) either. This was something much bigger. Or multiple somethings. There was hardly any sign of the ducks having been snatched but after a little investigating on my part, I found one body on our neighbors property. It was pretty well gone and the other 3 were completely gone with no signs of them. Whatever it was that got them had jumped the fence into their pen and snatched them.
To be honest, I am not super-duper attached to the ducks like I am our dogs or goats or pretty much any of our other critters because they are not as friendly as the rest of the animals. They are definitely not aggressive and I definitely care about them and do not want them hurt or killed so I think what I mean is they are not as docile and loving as the rest of our critters. You can't pick them up without cornering them and they do not enjoy it. These ducks were pretty much egg layers- but I like them. Not to mention, we have fed and cared for them for the past year and put money into building a nice pen for them.
The issue I have with losing them though is our neighbor (not the one where the duck body was). Our other neighbor is a complete jerk. He and his wife both are completely unfriendly, anti-social and basically whiners. We have a lot of coyote activity and some mountain lion activity on our property, the neighboring properties and the 100 vacant acres behind our house. We have lost 2 baby goats (prior to moving them to a more secure pasture) and now 5 ducks to predators. We have Callie and Bear to help with that issue. They were both babies when we lost the goats so there is nothing they could have done at that time. Until about the middle of November they were locked on the back deck at night because Eric and I both felt they were too young to handle any interaction with a predator animal but after we lost the first duck, we decided that it was time for them to do their job. They are now 2 years old and are probably ready for it. Their breed (Anatolian Shepherd) is bred specifically as a flock guardian. They guard Eric and myself in addition to all of our other animals.
Probably about a month after we decided they were okay off the deck at night, we got a complaint for barking from Animal Control. Our neighbor (again, the jerk) evidently went to them and complained about Callie barking at night. He didn't come to us first so we could or could not do something about it, he did not call us, he did not write us, he did not tape a note to our gate, nothing. He cowardly went to Animal Control and whined to them about her barking.
*Side note* This is the same guy who, when the dogs were puppies, was throwing rocks through his fence at Bear who was barking at him because the guy was yelling at him. Bear was on our property, not his. Never once did the guy try to talk nicely to the dogs or "get to know" them or anything. Instead, I caught him throwing rocks at my puppy. Needless to say, he and I had words and I nearly tore his head off that day. Also, Bear came into the house one evening bleeding from his back and had likely been shot. We definitely think from that guy.
*Another side note* We were warned about this guy when we bought the house. Evidently Animal Control is on his speed dial and a regular route of travel for him.
*A third and final side note* Anatolian Shepherds are skeptical of other animals and humans until they know that they "belong". They tend to bark at them (especially as puppies) until they get to know them. They bond a little more quickly to humans, particularly humans who are friendly toward them.
So, long story longer... After we got the complaint from Animal Control we decided to keep the dogs on the back deck again at night until we decided what to do about the situation. Meanwhile, we are hearing the coyotes each night thinking hopefully none of them come too close to the house or anything. Eric attempted to contact the neighbor 3 times via phone call to discuss the situation with no return call. He will be paying him a home visit this week but until we talked with him about it, we did not want a second complaint to Animal Control so keeping them locked up was looking like what we had to do.
Fast-forward to Friday night/Saturday morning and we lost 3 female Khaki Campbell layers and our male Blue Runner.
I truly feel like if our dogs had been able to be out doing their job, we may not have lost the ducks. I know we could have just left them off the deck and who cares what he thinks, etc. but I do not want to be bad neighbors and I was hoping we could discuss the situation with him to maybe explain why the dogs will bark at night. Also, it is not like Callie barks all night long, she only barks when she sees, hears or smells something close by or when all of the neighbor dogs are barking in their more serious tone. There are some nights when she doesn't even leave the deck still, even with it open.
Jerk neighbor still has not returned any of Eric's phone calls, still no note, nothing. Like I said, Eric is going to his house this week and will hopefully talk to him in person but he will also have a letter ready if his gate is locked (like it usually is).
One thing Eric will be mentioning to him is that our dogs are inadvertently protecting his animals as well. They walk the fence line at night when they smell and hear stuff and keep critters away from all areas of our property which benefits him since his entire back property line runs the length of our side property line.
I am obviously frustrated but seriously? The guy is such a coward and a bad neighbor. Come talk to us, we are not irrational or irresponsible. We will do what we can to remedy any situation. Plus, one thing I haven't even mentioned is how far away his house is to where Callie is barking. It's not a residential subdivision that we are talking about here. We are all on a minimum 5 acre parcel. She would likely be down by our entry gate barking which is probably at least 2 acres away from him. Now, I know sound travels and all of that but we ARE OUT IN THE COUNTRY. I want to tell him to move back to the city. I hear neighborhood dogs barking all hours of the day/night/evening/morning. It does not bother me because I know MANY of our neighbors have dogs as a warning system and for protection. Also, I know what it is like to live in the country (and I am not a whiner).
Luckily, we do have his complaint history on our side because Animal Control did say that before they take any action against us (after the second complaint they come "investigate" the situation to make a determination), they look to see if he has excessive complaints (which he does) and they will likely take his complaints less seriously.
I did get our dogs licensed and of course, they are all up on vaccines and well cared for, etc. So that is not a concern for me.
I am MUCH feistier than Eric and that is why he is currently handling this issue with the neighbor but I can definitely say, this guy is bringing out the Mama Bear in me. He'd better not cross me in a dark alley! Lol.
We will now be adding a roof to the duck pen because we will be replacing the ducks and do not want any more of them to get snatched, suffer or be hurt. Not to mention, they go into shock each time something like that happens and they stop laying eggs.
Thank you for letting me vent, apparently I needed it!

Date Night
Last night, Eric and I decided to have a date night.
We met up in El Dorado Hills for dinner at Early Toast then went to the theater and saw The Hobbit in 3D IMAX.
Dinner was absolutely delicious and we had plenty of time to sit and enjoy the food and atmosphere before our movie. They were having a weeknight special of 2 burgers with fries and 2 brews for $20. That is an amazing deal for dinner and we couldn't pass it up. Eric (of course) had to upgrade his burger from the standard, albeit very large cheeseburger, to the fully loaded bacon cheeseburger and onion rings and they only charged $1.50 more. I mean, to leave a restaurant after having dinner and beers (and tip) for around $30 is pretty amazing. Plus, the food is really very good.
The movie was also wonderful. Before I met Eric, I would never have watched a movie like that (I am a romantic comedy kind of girl) but I am really getting into that kind of thing. Anyway, I am actually looking forward to the conclusion of the Hobbit series and will probably have to watch all of the Lord of the Ring movies now too. We will see, I don't want to jump in too quickly.
Once we got home, we spent a few minutes loving each of the dogs and the bunny then we hopped in the hot tub for about 20 minutes.
Overall, it was a great night and I think we will start to try to do these date nights once a month or so. I liked it and especially liked being with my Hubby.

Testing out the New Hot Tub
Maiden Voyage!
We've been in the hot tub nightly since the electrical was completed on Saturday.
So far, we love it!
It was not easy taking a "selfie" with our camera hovered above all of that water but we managed to make it work.
Thanks Michael, Marci, Linus, Lila and Sawyer for the glowing Shark and Duck! They have accompanied us each time we've taken a dip.
I am already learning my favorite seats and Eric definitely has his figured out as well.
I finally know how to work the jets but the lights have so many options that I haven't quite figured them out yet.
The dogs stand guard and sleep against the side while we relax inside the tub and Roscoe tries to lick our arms if they are at all exposed.
Callie and Bear will come near but not right next to the tub while we are in it because they are afraid they may have to get a bath or something. Now, if it were a slimy, muddy, stinky pond they would have no reservations whatsoever.
Callie took one of Eric's sandals one of the nights and started off toward the yard with it but luckily she listens very well and brought it most of the way back with no damage to it.
Anyway, so far we are not regretting the purchase and I am planning to use it as often as possible. Also, I am starting to sleep a little better!

Bear's Recovery
Bear is recovering very well, thank you all for checking in on him.
Here are a couple of photos of the collateral damage.
He no longer needs to wear the cone, thankfully.
He only went through 2 cones and he is basically back to normal again. That makes us very happy!

Our Recent "Project"
Well, she FINALLY arrived!
We have been waiting for 7 weeks for this baby to finally make her arrival at our home (we were told 3-4 weeks originally).
The electrician comes tomorrow morning to get the wiring done so we can *hopefully* hop in tomorrow night!
Eric had to pour a slab because the concrete patio slopes downward for rain water run-off. That was a project by itself just getting ready for the hot tub.
Next step: Gazebo!
After Gazebo: Out Door Living Area!

Hunny Bunny
We let Hunny Bunny out of her cage several times a day when the dogs are outside (which I know appears to be very little but is actually quite often) to run around the living room and play. After she kicks up her heels for a bit, she throws herself down either in a cat bed or in front of the fireplace.
This was her choice on Monday night:

New Years Eve
Here is how we spent New Years Eve:
Unfortunately, Bear had to be rushed to the emergency vet for surgery yesterday afternoon. Eric discovered blood dripping from Bear's rear-end around noon yesterday only to discover his skin between his tail and his anus was completely torn open and had exposed the interior of his anus. We still do not know exactly what happened or why it happened but the vet was leaning toward trauma. He may have caught it on a fence or something that I am still unsure of. He had it repaired last night and we picked up him shortly after midnight. He is doing well now and resting but he sure knows how to ring in the new year!
P.S. I am sparing you the gruesome photos of the actual injury. It's gross.

Unfortunately, Bear had to be rushed to the emergency vet for surgery yesterday afternoon.
